Sneznik castle

Snežnik castle is considered as one of the best preserved castles in Slovenia. Snežnik Castle is situated in southwest part of Slovenia, at the bottom of the Loška dolina valley.

The first written documents to the Sneznik castle dates back to 1269.  The castle itself is first mentioned in 1461, as the manor of Sneberk.

In spite of long periods of war during the subsequent centuries, the castle has preserved its image and furnishing.

The castle building is surrounded by a renaissance wall. The castle was heavily remodeled in the second half of the 19th century; the majority of the interior furnishings date from this period, as do the castle parkgrounds, which are characterized by numerous meadows connected by riding and walking paths, bordered with numerous chestnut and linden tree rows.

Beside the castle are two small artificial lakes, filled by the streams Obrh and Brezno.

The three storey castle is closed, now due to extensive renovations. The neighbouring Dormouse Museum is still open to visitors.
