Blarney Castle, Cork

The history of Blarney Castle stretches back as far as 1210AD, and the castle you see here today, is in fact, the third castle to be built at this site. It was built by one of Ireland’s greatest chieftains, Cormac MacCarthy in 1446. The castle is now a partial ruin with some accessible rooms and battlements. At the top of the castle lies the Stone of Eloquence, better known as the Blarney Stone.

The castle lies beside the River Martin and is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. There are also a number of walks throughout the estate and an arboretum.

Surrounding the castle are extensive gardens. There are paths touring the grounds with signs pointing out the various attractions. Blarney House, also open to the public, is a Scottish baronial-style mansion that was built on the grounds in 1874.

Blarney House is located just 200 yards from the great castle. It  is beautifully located overlooking Blarney Lake. Take a tour of the house and see a magnificent collection of art, tapestries, antiques and family portraits.
